Umbraco, pizza, and beer - welcome to the BUUG

By Matthew 5-10 minute read

There’s nothing like kicking a night off chatting about a CMS you’re passionate for with 5 metres of delicious pizza and cold, local-brewed beer. The first Brisbane Umbraco Unicorns Group (BUUG for short) meetup was a remarkable success. We started the night off meeting and greeting the attendees from around Brisbane, all with a common interest in learning more about and having greater involvement in the “hygge” community of Umbraco. With representatives from both Umbraco Gold partners in Australia as well as many other like-minded developers from across Brisbane, we had a range of abilities from stirring interest to the everyday aficionado.

Once Pablo the office dog had successfully accosted everyone for any and all stray pizza scraps, we moved into the part of the evening where we heard from recent Umbraco MVP and beer-in-hand guest speaker for our first meetup, Nathan Woulfe (@nathanwoulfe). The topic of discussion was all about the future of Umbraco and the community of Codegarden.

We had a very casual, open discussion about Umbraco 8’s new interface and features such as content variants and segments. While I listened, my imagination buzzed with all the ways these features could benefit some of the projects we are currently working on. There’s clearly a lot of effort going into the next big release, especially in cleaning up and dramatically reducing the size of the code base, and there is a lot of excitement building for the v8 launch. We also listened to some of the shenanigans that happen at Codegarden every year, which shows how cheerful and supportive the Umbraco community is, if not with a little too much “cheer” sometimes.

I’m interested in seeing more from the Umbraco meetups. It’s the first developer meetup I’ve ever been to and it’s so refreshing to share your successes and problems with people who actually understand and have gone through the same experiences. I’d love to see even more interaction and collaboration in the future, and I would highly recommend coming along to the next one too whether you’re an expert or a newbie.

Our next BUUG meetup will be on Thursday the 18th of October and is a series of lightning talks - short 10 minute presentations on anything Umbraco. Either come and bring your good listening face and a willingness to learn, or even run a lightning talk yourself and tell us about a problem you defeated with Umbraco or just something cool you want to show off. If you are interested in coming along, let us know here and if you’d like to speak, contact Elizabeth on the Brisbane Umbraco Unicorns Group meetup page. Hope to see you at the next one!
