Googling around there are a number of stories on surviving what's known as the Digg effect (high traffic). But the number one tip I could give would be to evaluate your hosting. Ensure your website is with a reputable and high quality company, establish a great relationship and if you're expecting a high load give them a call to discuss preparation.
