Looking for ideas for a client project, I came across a fascinating man who makes affordable housing from material that is salvaged or recycled. This man is Dan Phillips of Phoenix Commotion.

I want to share this with you on this blog because it is inspiring to me - it shows innovation and creativity and proves that with a little bit of thinking outside the box, you can achieve amazing things.
Now, these houses are not merely piles of trash, they are wonderful, whimsical creations able to be built cheaper than a new modern house as there is usually no (or very little) cost for materials so all that is paid for is the man hours to put it all together.
Not only is this housing funky and unique - it has THREE feel good factors which make us all a little warm and fuzzy inside (and make you want one all the more):
1. It is helping the environment by using salvaged and recycled material which would otherwise go into landfill
2. The building process uses apprentice labour and teaches valuable skills to individuals in the community
3. The homeowners must be involved in the planning and construction process, giving a sense of ownership

We lust after the greatest advances in technology and sometimes need to be reminded of what is beautiful as so many crafts are being forgotten - these housing projects make me rethink the world around me, make me think about what it is that makes something special and it is the human touches, the imperfections that make something unique and appealing.
